MEGADETH
line up: Dave Mustaine (vocals/guitar)
Jeff Young (guitar)
Dave Ellefson (bass)
Chuck Behler (drums)
After that guitarplayer Dave Mustaine has left Metallica in april '83, he
starts with guitarplayer Robbie Cromwell and drummer Mike Leswick the band
Fallen Angels. However, it lasts only half a year. After this, Dave decides to
found the band Megadeth, together with his neighbour Dave Ellefson and drummer
Lee Rash. To focus some more on his singing, Dave is assisted by
Slayer-guitarplayer Kerry King for the first some gigs. After Mustaine has
signed a contract with Combat Records, Chris Poland is attracted to be the
second guitarplayer and drummer Lee Rash is replaced by Gar Samuelson. This
line up records end of '84 the first record "Killing is my Business.. and
Business is Good". Due to a far too low budget, halfway the recordings the
producer has to be fired and the band finishes the record themselves. This
results in a bad production and sound. When, after the American tour, Megadeth
again enters the studio to record "Peace Sells.. but who's Buying?", finances
are much better, because Capitol Records has signed a deal with the band. The
combination of a tight and hard production, strong guitar riffs and socially
minded lyrics show Megadeth's qualities. Between all activities, both Daves do
background vocals on the album "License to Kill" from Malice. After this, they
leave to Europe for an European Megadeth-tour. Back in the States, Megadeth
gets involved in a law-suit, because another band claims the name, but this
ends well. Not so well are Gar Samuelson and Chris Poland: they are replaced by
Chuck Behler and (after a short time working with Jay Reynolds, ex-Malice) Jeff
Young. In this new line up they record the third album "So Far, so Good.. so
What". There's a guest-role for the old Sex Pistols guitarplayer Steve Jones:
he can be heard on a cover of his own "Anarchy in the U.K.". Mustaine produces
the album himself, supported by Michael Wagener for the mix. He produces also
the first record of Sanctuary, a band discovered by himself. He appears to be a
self-willed producer that knows what he wants. Guitarplayer Jeff Young quits
under this pressure of producer Mustaine to found his own band Broken Silence.
Pantera's Darell Lance is approached but he refuses.
